'I love you'에서 알 수 있듯, 영어의 목적격(~을/를)에는 전치사가 붙지 않습니다. 반대로, 'I am going to that school.'에서 알 수 있듯, 목적격이 아닐 경우(해석 상 '~을/를'로 해석되지 않는 경우)에는 전치사가 붙습니다. 단, 전치사와 조사는 다른 개념이므로, 영어를 공부하는 한국인에게는 특정 단어와 호응하는 전치사를 그때그때 기억해야 하는 고통이 뒤따르지요.
문제는 '~을/를'로 해석되지 않음에도, 영어에서 목적격으로 취급하여 어떤 전치사도 붙지 않는 경우가 있다는 점입니다. 가장 유명한 예시는 시험문제에 단골로 등장하는 'I marry you' (I marry with you ×)이지만, marry 이외에도 전치사가 필요 없는 동사는 많습니다.
